You may hear mostly British Airways on the airbands talking about 'CPDLC'. It stands for:

Controller Pilot Data Link Communications

I sounds a little like acars? Is it all done by text or is there voice as well? I wonder if there are any programs that can decode it...

It's all data link via satellite . There is no voice communication at all . All comms are via keypad and aircraft get replies or commands via an onboard printer housed in the centre console of the flightdeck . For example a CPDLC equipped aircraft routing say SYD -LAX would have voice comms only with SYD departures and Brisbane Centre on 128.6 , after that its all data link until handover to Oakland Centre on VHF . There are no voice comms for approx 13 Hrs of the flight !!.. I'm not sure whether its possible to decode or not .

If I decode the 'raw news feeds' via satellite and Mark F can listen to ATC via satellite, I am sure we can do it. Any thoughts Mark?
